Elsie's PhDs

Does anyone find it easy to hold themselves accountable?

I am having trouble getting my UFOs (unfinished objects) or PhDs (Projects half done) out of that category and into the glorious domain of FINISHED! My solution is to post them and their progress on this page so all the world (or at least a few quilting friends) can give me a kick now and then to get at it. I am missing one photo, but I'll get that done one of these days.

When I make some progress, I will edit the postings rather than stick on a new one, and put a link HERE to the latest developments.

We have a small group of quilters in our church. We meet once a month. Last year I showed them a new block each meeting and wound up with enough to make a good size sampler quilt.

The colors in this photo are terrible. The blue is a light Dutch blue, and the lighter color is cream. Ignore that yellow look. It is not there. I'm trying to think of something neat for sashing. I've other excuses why this one isn't done, but that one will do for now.

I made a Dear Jane middle and put different borders on it than the triangles in the original. Then I decided to make another quilt with the triangles. My pattern is the small sketch, and the larger photo is what I have done so far.

These triangles are "fun" if you like fussy, no patterns or instructions. Most are foundation paper-pieced or just picky piecing. This will get a different name when (if) I ever get it finished.

Take a package of charm squares, make several large nine-patches from them (darks in middle and on corners), cut in half both ways, and rearrange. Simple formula, simple sewing = complicated looking quilt. I made this in a few hours. The background adds to that overcrowded flower garden feel. Actually, the quilt looks better than the photo, maybe because it is much bigger. Anyway, I rather like it. It needs backing, batting, quilting and binding.

These is a "cut free-form, put on the wall" kind of quilt. I started it in a class, and like some things about it but not others. My idea was to make it the shape that the "flowers" form, bind it with the green/red "tree branch" fabric, and try to figure out how to hang it.

We'll see if it 'ever' gets finished. The photo was taken in class and included my sewing machine and my head. Can you see where I removed both?

This one was from a class with the queen of Mariner's Compass quilts, Judy Mathieson. I wondered if it would look better if it was scrappier? However, the bigger problems is finishing it and hanging it up. I've figured out a way to put it into a sling sort of thing, which will be a challenge, but will look great. This one is easily 36" across. Sorry about getting my big foot into the picture.

I took a design class from Elizabeth Barton in Canmore early in 2008, and she encouraged me to develop my style, to design something that is what I'd really like to do. I am so excited about this quilt. It is another mountain and will be pieced similar to Ruth McDowell's method. If you read this blog, poke me about this one. It must be completed! This quilt has no photo yet, just a pattern that I drafted and the fabrics. Maybe I'm scared to even try it...?

The Sugar Pine in Canmore, Alberta hosts art quilt classes every year. This was my quilt in 2007. I used to do acrylic paintings of the Rockies and wanted to capture that look in fabric. I love this, even though I'm not crazy about raw-edge applique. It needs to be sandwiched and quilted. Likely no border or binding. The actual scene is a combo of two or three of my own photographs.

I've a lot more of these in my head. If I ever get this one done, there will be others.

FINISHED!

I know... they are done and don't belong here, but I just had to put them in because I need the boost of a big FINISHED beside something! I won't put any other photos of them in since you can go back to my blog and find them. I made eleven, sold five, and gave away one to Karol-Ann who kindly sent me a few heart patterns. This one now lives beside her bed in Lancaster, England.

October 22/08

I quilted a middle section of #2 Black & Red Grad Challenge (this name will change) using a free motion design that I made up. First I did a sketch, then a practice sandwich (about 12" square), then plunged right in. Sorry, the picture isn't great. Flashbulb issues. It is the back side as there is more contrast on the back. It will be densely quilted.

My husband laughs at me because I really like doing this yet procrastinate? What is that? Maybe I am just lazy?

November 10/08

The quilting is done. I pinned this puppy to the carpet, squaring it up with my hubby's help. Then I steamed it with my iron and let it dry. It is still on the floor, but looks fabulous with the light shining through the window on the quilting. I'm very happy with the results. The binding is made, so just needs to be sewn on. I still haven't come up with a name for this one, but at least the end is in sight!

November 27/08

The binding is on, and the quilt is being shown at Earthly Goods for a few days along with other quilts from this challenge. I've no photo yet, but am really happy with the way it looks. The new name of this quilt is "Down the Garden Path" partly because of the path-like pieces in the blocks, and because the fabrics and quilting have a flora theme.

December 1/08

Took some pictures, made a label. Sewed it on. This quilt is 62" square and will be given to my brother and his wife.

Colors are not true since I took the photo in the dark (sigh), but even with true colors, it is pretty ugly. The quilting was fun though!

December 2008. I've quilted this with free-motion leaves using my new HQ-16 longarm. What fun, but I had to change the name. It sort of fits with the way time seems to pass quilckly at yearend, and with the way life seems to go by too fast before I get everything done that I want to do. However it is now finished and rather nicer than I expected.

I'm pleased with the piecing, but still need lots of practice with quilting on my HQ-16. It looks good, as long as you don't look too close! This quilt is fairly large for a baby, about 60.5" square, but I used a light batting so it is a "summer" quilt for great granddaughter, Ami Jane Marie!

This small quilt is made from all the leftover reds from the Grad Challenge Quilt and from my stash of little pieces. It was fun to make, and it quite striking. A friend of mine, who knows my faith, suggested the name in reference to Isaiah 53:5. I quilted an allover and sketchy Rose of Sharon design, appropriate as it is a term for Jesus Christ, then tried a Shiva paint stick on it to highlight the quilting. I'm not sure I like it, but I can always put the Easter ham platter over the middle (LOL) since this will be our Easter table center.

For the gulls, I printed pictures unto fabric and then needle-turned them, which was much easier than I expected. These birds are about 1-2" from wingtip to wingtip. A friend gave me that marvelous piece of sky fabric!

The water has beads, some yarn that looks like seaweed, lace to look like foam, and some lamé peeking out in a couple of places. I also put tulle over the darker part after deciding it was too dark.

The sand also has tulle to give it varying shades. I only used one fabric for the three sand parts. It has small beads that look like shells, plus shells that really are shells, a little piece of driftwood, plus more beads and a fence with some of the same sea-weed looking yarn hanging on it as I put in the water. I outlined the shadow thinking a darker shadow would be too busy.

I love this style of quilt. I'm not a lover of thread play, but doing it as if I were sketching was fun. I used two layers of batting in this, one very light one for the quilting, and the other to give it some body so it hangs correctly. I'm of the opinion that a second sleeve on the bottom with a piece of flat iron would work better (and be easier). I will be doing more of these and have hundreds of photos take in the Rockies as inspiration.

I participated in a class for "Celebration of Hearts" (named mine "Home Sweet Hearts") and everyone made a bunch of these log cabin type blocks. I wound up with several leftovers and decided to see what they would look like floating on a sky background. The name was changed from "Celebration Leftovers" and the new name fits the quilting, the style of the blocks, and the colors.

Most of them worked together for "English Country Garden" using the "disappearing nine patch" block, but a few did not, so I made this little quilt that would look good under a foliage plant!
